Maritime-related fatalities remain at a low level with recreational-related deaths generally higher than commercial-related deaths. The low number of deaths in 2018 was real — we hope it is the start of a new trend.

Maritime social costs only include reported deaths and commercial serious harm. In 2016, the cost was NZD$106.9 million (2015 dollars), the lowest since 2007.
